THE CESSATION OF THE HONOURED RED SOLDIERS

Despite the long and strenuous processes our body had to gone through just to nurture the red soldiers, they are destined to only have a fleeting moment of existence. 120 days are the approximate time that they have in order to fulfil their pledge to protect our body. After the period, it will undergo destruction and degraded into several protein parts before reformed back as a normal red blood cell in the next cycle. Destructed red blood cells are removed by the macrophages that located in the bone marrow and spleen.

Destruction of red blood cells causes haemoglobin catabolism as well. In the previous post, we already explained to you the erythropoiesis process that involve the merging of haem and globin protein in order to form haemoglobin. In this degradation process, haem and globin that coexist peacefully for 120 days will choose to part ways. The process of catabolism and excretion of destructed cells are shown below:

Simply put, we can say that the breakdown of the red soldier cells will involve three methods:

1) Recycle of iron into the erythroblast via transport protein, transferrin.
2) Breaking down of photoporphyrin into bilirubin.
3) Conversion of globin into amino acids.

Don’t be too shocked. After all, nothing is permanent is this world, not even our very own existence.

In order to make the short life of our red blood cells much easier, why don’t we start to practice a healthy life style? As we explained in the previous entry before, the regulation of our blood cells is also related with our dietary intake and daily chores. Therefore, let’s start make sure the sacrifices made by our little soldiers worthwhile from today onwards. Furthermore, the healthier the diet you practice, the prettier you will be. After all, didn’t we already told you that the production of erythropoietin can make your face glowing? Well, although not as good as glowing in the dark, it still better than having a dull face all the time, isn’t it?

I think it is time for us to part ways, just like the haem and globin protein. Although we only spent a short time together, it can be considered as a memorable one for us. I hope our sharing session is a useful one for all of you. We are very sorry if there are any contents in our entries offended any of you and we would like to convey our gratitude to you for staying with us to the end. Thank you and till we meet again.
